Lommen Abdo Law Firm

Success is not a matter of luck.

Success requires experience, expertise, preparedness, tenacity and a true client partnership. That’s true whether you are looking for a trial lawyer, a corporate attorney, an estate planner, a divorce attorney or a tax lawyer. Lommen Abdo wants to be your legal partner.

We invite you to talk with us about alternatives to traditional hourly billing rates. We have traditionally charged for most legal work on an hourly basis and continue to do so in most instances. However, alternative billing methods can provide you with greater predictability as to the total fee you will have to pay and help you budget for the year. Some alternative billing methods also provide for a sharing of the risk between you and Lommen Abdo. We are happy to work with you to find a mutually beneficial alternative billing method when possible. There are a number of options we can consider.

There are lots of lawyers out there. Who do you want as your advocate?

At Lommen Abdo, legal acumen is a given. It’s how we use it on your behalf that makes us the law firm with whom you want to do business. We call upon the resources of our entire law firm on your behalf. Our collective experience is both deep and broad — and we talk to each other to make sure we’ve uncovered the best possible approach to handling your matter. We’re competitive on your behalf.

We listen. We ask questions. We propose solutions. We listen again. We present options and make sure you understand the pros and cons of each. We handle disagreements with tact and deliberation. We strive for effective resolution. We charge reasonable fees. When you receive our invoice, you’ll see exactly what services and costs are being billed.

Participating in community and professional association activities has always been important to the lawyers at Lommen Abdo. Many lawyers in the firm serve or have served as mayors, on city councils, committees, school boards, non-profit boards, legal aid agencies, and as leaders of state and national bar associations. Providing pro bono services to the disadvantaged has also been a tradition that continues throughout the decades at Lommen Abdo. The firm has repeatedly held a drive for the Toys for Tots organization during the holidays and has served as a drop off location.

At Lommen Abdo, we approach the practice of law the same way you approach your business and personal matters…with passion and commitment. We provide excellent services with personal attention to your specific needs. We’re a mid-size regional law firm where our attorneys actually do the work, supported by specially trained paralegals, skilled legal administrative assistants, energetic support staff and state-of-the-art technology. We have offices in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Hudson, Wisconsin, but offer video conferencing to reach people anywhere in the world. We accept MasterCard, VISA, Discover and American Express. Thirteen of our attorneys are admitted in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. If you would like more information about any area of our practice, please contact us.

Closely Held Business Practice

Our business attorneys work to enhance the opportunities and avoid the obstacles faced by family and closely held businesses.

Ninety-five percent of American businesses are family-owned. Those family-owned businesses generate 40% of the Gross National Product. Yet only 57% of owners of family-controlled businesses intend to transfer the business to family members. Only 30% of family businesses survive into the second generation. More than 50% of the business owners have more than half of their wealth tied up in their business.

These statistics demonstrate the great business opportunities that can be found in closely held businesses as well as the need for guidance to navigate the inherent pitfalls that can trap the unwary. Closely held businesses are often small to medium-size business enterprises where all shareholders tend to be active in the management of the business. The closely held corporate structure can provide advantages such as limited liability for shareholders and S corporation election for tax purposes while retaining many of the simplified, less formal operating procedures of sole proprietorships and partnerships. Our business attorneys focus on the needs of closely held businesses, including how to avoid legal disputes, how to avoid personal liability, the importance of well drafted buy-sell agreements, the value of thoughtful succession and exit planning, and understanding shareholder disputes or business divorces and how to best resolve them. We bring the expertise of an in-house counsel to our clients; serving as the “outside” general counsel by providing prompt, responsive and cost effective advice on a spectrum of legal needs.

Estate Planning

“Every client has a different story, a unique family situation and goals that are unlike anyone else’s. It is our job as attorneys to listen carefully and help you design a plan for the future.”
At Lommen Abdo, we measure our success by our clients’ success. Whether your estate is large, small or somewhere in between, whether you have relatively simple or complex family and business interests, we have the skills and resources you can always count on at our law firm.
None of us knows with certainty when — or if — we will need incapacity planning. We do not know when we will need an estate plan. At Lommen Abdo, we do know the peace of mind that an estate plan can bring to clients and to their families and other heirs.
